How do I configure Mozilla Thunderbird to work with outerHOST's email service?

Follow these instructions on how to configure Thunderbird 2.0 for use with the outerHOST mail system.

Upon first launch of Thunderbird, you may see the following dialog box:

If you see this prompt, leave 'Email account' checked and press Next.

On the other hand, if Thunderbird is already configured, you will see something like the screen below. If you do, click the Tools menu, Account Settings, and click Add Account.

Enter your full name (as you would like others to see it) using formal capitalization and spacing, similar to how it appears below. Then type your full e-mail address.

Click 'Next'.

Choose the 'IMAP' option as the type of incoming mail server you are using. Then, set both the incoming and outgoing servers to 'mail.outerhost.net' as shown below.

Click 'Next'.

Make sure the incoming user name contains your full e-mail address, not just the stem before the @ symbol.

Click 'Next'.

Choose a "friendly" name for your account that will be for your reference only, similar to the example below.

Click 'Next'.

Click 'Finish'.

You will be prompted for your account password. Type it in the box provided and choose whether you want your computer to remember the password.

Press 'OK'.

Click Tools, Account Settings as shown below. This will not be necessary if Thunderbird was already configured with another account when you began this process.

Click 'Server Settings' under the account you created and make sure 'Mark it as deleted' is selected as the deletion option. You can choose to remove it immediately if you choose, but do not choose the 'Move it to the Trash folder' option, as unexpected behaviors may occur.

Click the 'Compositiion and Addressing' option on the left hand side. You may want your reply to start above the quote, as shown below.

The last step is important. Click 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' on the left hand side. Choose the email address you set up and press 'Edit'.

Change the port value from 25 to 29.

You can now press 'OK' twice to exit the email configuration options.

You now have use of your outerHOST mailbox by clicking the Inbox folder under your new account.
